Comfort Considerations
Ever been in an uncomfortable home? Perhaps you've owned one or even own one now. Wouldn't you like to think that your new home would be comfortable? Of course you would, but there is little reason to believe that it will be unless you work with a builder that is taking extra effort to ensure that your home will avoid the common comfort problems that homes today have.
Common Comfort Problems
The "Goldilocks" Effect
Technically this is known as stratification. It's when the upstairs of a home is noticeably warmer than the lower floors. Homes act like chimneys, the more floors in your home the more chimney you have. It's called the stack effect and it creates a variety of challenges in keeping homes comfortable. Combined with typically poor duct systems, we see this problem in many new homes.
Rooms over garages
Rooms over garages and other unconditioned spaces are notoriously difficult to heat and cool although there are simple ways for builders to address these areas. We've visited many new homes with this problem. Like most problems that we deal with for homeowners, it is potentially difficult to address after the fact, but easily dealt with at construction.
Uneven temperature throughout a home
This is often an indication of a duct system problem. Sometimes it is easy to fix and sometimes it is difficult and expensive. EnergyLogic raters provide you with answers to these problems in existing homes.
Fireplaces and entertainment centers too cold
In many new homes, homeowners have complained that these areas were uncomfortable to be near. It's terribly ironic and not very funny that you might be too cold in front of your fireplace. Solving the problem is easy for a builder that pays attention to these kind of details.
